The Duke University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) seeks to promote the welfare of faculty, staff, and students at Duke University with a focus on our membership's top concerns: building labor power, transparency and faculty governance, and academic and intellectual freedom.
We follow the national AAUP mission "to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good."
In October 2025, Duke AAUP became the second largest AAUP chapter in North Carolina, in friendly competition with our friends at UNC Chapel Hill. Our membership includes faculty of all ranks, researchers, librarians, archivists, graduate and professional students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff involved in the academic and research mission in all divisions of the university, including Duke Health Integrated Practice.
